(Keystone-SDA) The renovation and expansion of the Bernese Historical Museum is getting closer. On Tuesday, the Grand Council made a contribution of 2.5 million francs to the project planning.
The decision was clear with 131 votes to 12 and 8 abstentions. The Bern community already agreed to a loan of the same amount in December. The decision of the Bern City Council is still pending. The canton, city and municipality of Bern are the museum’s foundation sponsors.
The 130-year-old building in the Kirchenfeld district has been rebuilt and expanded several times. Now it is to be completely renovated for the first time and at the same time an extension is to be added. There are also plans to connect the house to the new Bern Museum Quarter.
The canton, city and municipality of Bern will one day contribute a maximum of 40 million francs each to the overall renovation. The Grand Council is expected to decide on the cantonal contribution in 2026. The renovation work is scheduled to start in 2027 and last four years.
