The health authorities of Beijing, China, detected the Omicron variant on the outer package, surface, and paperwork of package documents from Canada. This led the authorities to suspect that the document was the source of the transmission of the patient identified on Saturday (15/1/).
The Omicron patient is known to have received the package of documents on January 11, 2022. The package has been sent from Canada since January 7, transferred via the United States and the Hong Kong region, China, to Beijing.
Check up result
To trace this case, the health authorities carried out a series of examinations combined with epidemiological studies. The results of this examination were revealed by the Deputy Director of the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Pang Xinghuo.
“Combined with epidemiological studies, test results of suspicious samples and gene sequencing results of the case, the possibility of this (Omicron) case in Beijing being infected by the virus via international mail packets is unavoidable,” Pang said. Global Times, Tuesday (18/1/2022).
“The types of Omicron variants in patients in Beijing are similar to those in North America and Singapore in December 2021,” Pang said.
Seeing the results of the examination, the health authorities immediately ruled out the suspicion that this patient was infected due to the Omicron outbreak that was happening in a number of cities in China.
From the test results on 22 samples related to the letter, it shows that there is an Omicron variant. It was found on two samples of the outer surface of the mailing package, two samples of the inner surface of the package, and eight samples of the paper inside the mail.
Patient contact history
It is known that the patient only touched the outside of the package and the front page of the document in the package from Canada. It does not touch the internal surfaces of letters or other paper.
In addition to the patient, eight people related to the letter were also tracked down. And from the nucleic acid test results, they were declared negative.
Due to the discovery of a virus in this document package, several other international document packages sent via the same route were also tested. Although not yet opened, the documents also tested positive for COVID-19.
