Wout van Aert Lawsuit and Transfer Soap Opera: Latest Updates and Potential Penalties

The lawsuit between Wout van Aert and Nick Nuyens is still pending and could cause Van Aert serious problems…

The current transfer soap opera surrounding Cian Uitjdebroeks is reminiscent of the feud between Wout van Aert and Nick Nuyens. Van Aert broke his contract with Nuyens’ team in 2018 because there had been tensions between the two for some time. According to Van Aert, there was an ‘urgent reason’, ie a serious error by the employer, which makes any further cooperation impossible.

662,000 euros fine

The court initially followed that reasoning, but on appeal Van Aert was still sentenced to compensation of 662,000 euros. The Court spoke of “a grossly exaggerated and blown out of proportion incident.”

Both gentlemen then went to Cassation, where the case is still pending. If Cassation confirms the ruling of the judge in the Higher Appeal, Van Aert can get into even more trouble. The UCI can also impose a sanction on him, but they will wait until the Belgian court has ruled.

4 months suspension

These penalties are not easy: Van Aert risks a suspension of four months and a fine of no less than 100,000 Swiss francs (approximately the same amount in euros). And Jumbo-Visma could also receive a hefty fine. It is prohibited to sign a rider who is still under contract elsewhere. They risk a fine of 500,000 Swiss francs (times three because outside the summer transfer period) and compensation of 13 months’ salary.

Fortunately, Nick Nuyens and his lawyer have indicated that they will not insist on a suspension. “My client has little interest in this yet,” says lawyer Rudi Desmet The newspapaer. They want the money. “Jumbo must pay the same sum that Wout van Aert himself has already paid.”
