Wout van Aert also suffered a bruised lung in the crash: “That makes breathing difficult, but recovery is going well”

Wout van Aert also suffered a bruised lung in his serious crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen. His team Visma – Lease a Bike announced this on Friday during a press moment on the sidelines of Paris-Roubaix. The recovery of the Kempen resident’s open wounds is going well.

Van Aert was one of the victims of the high-speed crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen on March 27. It had been known for some time that, in addition to serious abrasions, he also suffered fractures to a collarbone, sternum and several ribs. These injuries meant that the 29-year-old Kempen native had to draw a line through the rest of the preseason, including Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix.

It is now also clear that Van Aert also suffered a bruised lung in his crash. “That makes his breathing difficult,” said Merijn Zeeman, the outgoing sporting boss of Visma – Lease a Bike, on Friday in the riders’ hotel in Compiègne. “I’m not going to go into the medical details of such a bruised lung, but I can say that it hurts.” Zeeman also said that Van Aert’s recovery is going well. “The large wound on his back looks a lot better.”

For the time being, the possibility is still open that Van Aert will start within a month in the Tour of Italy from 4 to 26 May. Investigations in the coming weeks should provide a definitive answer. “We still have to wait and see every day. See how everything evolves and how long Wout will be out,” says Zeeman.
