World’s Oldest Newspaper, Wiener Zeitung, Ceases Print Publication After 320 Years

The world’s oldest national newspaper, the Wien Zeitung, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, announced that due to recent laws passed in Austria, printed matter is no longer profitable and has decided to stop printing paper copies. The front page of the last issue of the “Vienna Zeitung” printed a number of numbers in big bold letters, including “116,840”, “12” and “1”, commemorating the history witnessed by the newspaper since its publication 320 years ago.

The Austrian government amended the law in April this year, abolishing the requirement that companies must pay to publish announcements in newspapers, and also terminated the role of the “Wiener Zeitung” as an official gazette.

Der Spiegel, a German magazine, estimated that the change would result in a loss of about 18 million euros (approximately HK$154 million) in revenue and forced layoffs of 63 people, of which the number of editors would be greatly reduced from 55 to 20.

The “Vienna Zeitung” issued its last print issue last Friday (June 30), and several numbers were listed on the front page to commemorate the history the newspaper had witnessed. The newspaper has experienced “116,840” days, “3,839” months, “320” years, and witnessed “12” presidents, “10” emperors and “2” republics, but it is always “1” newspaper.

After the newspaper stops printing paper, it will switch to electronic publishing. The newspaper intends to publish a monthly magazine, but the relevant plan is still in the discussion stage.

The “Vienna Daily” was founded in August 1703. When the newspaper was first published, it stated that it would tell the news directly without any speech or poetic embellishment.

The “Vienna Zeitung” once published the abdication letter of Kaiser Karl, the last monarch of the Habsburg dynasty and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It also reported in 1768 that a 12-year-old boy showed outstanding talent at a concert. Music genius Mozart (Wolfgang Mozart).

After Austria was incorporated into Nazi Germany in 1939, the newspaper ceased publication until 1945.

The world’s oldest surviving national newspaper is set to be replaced by Germany’s Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung, first published in 1705.
