The first prize of the World Press Photo contest was won by a photograph that captures a Palestinian woman holding in her arms the body of her dead niece, who was killed by an Israeli rocket in the Gaza Strip.
Reuters photojournalist Mohamed Salem saw and photographed Inas Maamar tightly hugging the lifeless body of her five-year-old niece, Sally. The little girl was killed along with her mother and sister when an Israeli rocket hit their home in Khan Younes, Gaza Strip. .
The photo was taken at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younes on October 17. 10 days after the start of the war in Gaza.
Mohammed Salem is a Palestinian, 39 years old, and has been working for Reuters since 2003. He also won the World Press Photo award in 2010. His wife gave birth to their child a few days before he took this photo.
“It’s a really deeply moving image…When you see it, it somehow sticks in your mind,” said Prize jury chair Fiona Shields.
