Defending Olympic champion in the decathlon, Canadian Damian Warner, in the lead after the first four events, gave up after being injured in the middle of the 400m at the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.
A thigh injury
Warner (32) visibly injured his left thigh after a hundred meters during the fifth event of the decathlon, the last of the first day of competition. He stopped in the middle of the race, even crashing on the Hayward Field track. Frenchman Kevin Mayer, double Olympic silver medalist (2016 and 2020) and 2017 world champion, occupy sixth place at halfway pointwith 4372 points.
It is the Puerto Rican Ayden Owens-Delerme who leads the provisional classification after five of the ten events, with 4606 points. The outgoing world champion, the German Niklas Kaul, is only in sixteenth position at mid-competition. Remain on the program for decathletes on Sunday 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m.
In addition to his two Olympic medals, gold in the summer of 2021 in Tokyo and bronze in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Warner has climbed the world podium three times: he was silver medalist in 2015 and bronze medalist in 2013 and in 2019.
