Women’s Olympics qualifications: why did Guinea not field its senior women’s team against Ghana?

CONAKRY- It’s really sickening that we lost heavily against Ghana 0-3 in Conakry on a detail that could have been settled if we stuck to FIFA Circular Note No. 1792 of April 11, 2022 which had contacted all its member associations to register their men’s and women’s selections for the preliminary competition which will be organized by each of the confederations in order to determine the participating teams.

Among the conditions required by FIFA, to be able to participate in the preliminary and final competitions of the Paris 2024 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, players must be born on or after January 1, 2001. However, a maximum of three players who do not meet this age limit may be included in the official list of players for the final competition of the men’s tournament.

« The players are not subject to any age restriction to participate in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament”.

It is therefore obvious that this competition does not concern any women’s U-23 team. It is rather the Women’s National Selection A, with the most representative players of the moment, that had to be selected and aligned against Ghana.
Unfortunately, by ignorance of the texts which govern the most exposed sports competition in the public square, namely the Summer Olympics, we exposed our brave young players under 23 in a category which was not theirs. Can’t wait for the correction of this blunder for future deadlines.

Ibrahima Blasco Barry, former Secretary General of FEGUIFOOT
