The wolf was filmed again in broad daylight. On Tuesday morning he crossed the Weg naar Opglabbeek in Oudsbergen just in front of a car. Mats Loos (21) from Meeuwen was able to film him. “He walked along the bike path past the cars, and crossed the road two or three times,” he says.

After the wolf was filmed several times at the end of October – from Opoeteren and Balen to Houthalen – it was quiet for a while. But Tuesday morning, another wolf appeared in broad daylight. The Weg naar Opglabbeek, the N76 between the center of Meeuwen and Opglabbeek, is a busy road where every morning a lot of traffic passes in the direction of Zwartberg (Genk). There the wolf walked around 20 past 8 on the cycle path along the busy road, and then crossed the road between the cars.

“I drove in the direction of Zwartberg and encountered him the first time just after the game crossing”, says student Mats Loos (21) from Meeuwen (Oudsbergen). “Then he walked in the direction of Meeuwen, on the right side of the road. A minute later he passed on the left on the bike path, in the direction of Zwartberg. He followed the cars for a few hundred yards, then crossed over in the direction of the fields. So he crossed the busy road two or three times. The wolf did not hesitate, but just crossed. That was not dangerous: because it is so busy there in the morning, the cars only drive 20 or 30 kilometers per hour. Then you can brake easily. He didn’t seem impressed with the cars, he was clearly looking for a way out. He eventually jumped over the grids on the field road on the right, in the direction of the winding road to Houthalen-Oost. He jumped very smoothly over those grids. He clearly had no problem with that.”

Mats was able to film the wolf briefly. “When I first saw him I was a bit overwhelmed, but I immediately grabbed my mobile,” he says. “When I saw him again, I was able to film. It’s a clean beast. He was quite big: you can compare it with a big husky I think.”(hdb)
