The small village of Abisko is one of the best places on earth to witness the Northern Lights phenomenon, which creates a spectacular display of rays of color across the sky. It is located about 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, in Säppmi, northern Sweden.

What is behind this?
The special weather phenomenon in this region is the reason for this phenomenon known as ‘Neeldwaram’ or ‘Blue Hole’. The wind in this area is mainly from the west. Moist air masses from the Atlantic must rise well into the cooler parts of the altitude to pass over the Scandinavian mountains. When this happens, clouds form and the resulting drizzle causes the air to lose moisture. As a result, the air in Abisko dries out and descends again, breaking up the clouds. The explanation given by the researchers is that this is how this blue hole is formed.

Aurora Sky Station is located in the foothills of Noolja Mountain at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. A 20-minute chairlift ride is available from here. As you take off, you’ll see the beautiful green glow of the Northern Lights dancing over the Abisko valley below and the frozen Tornetrask Lake, together with the blue hole stretching across the sky.
A rainbow made by the moon
Abisko is not only unique in its clear skies and Northern Lights. Another rare sight here is the ‘moonbows’ also known as lunar rainbows and lunar halos. Rainbows are formed when moonlight is reflected by water droplets and ice crystals near the blue hole.
Hiking and skiing
The village also has hiking trails to walk through many parts of the Scandinavian mountains. The Kungsleden hiking trail, about 425 km long, starts about 4 km west of the village. It passes through the Abisko National Park. The national park is known for its cross country skiing opportunities, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, freeriding etc.
Lapportan, a ‘U’ shaped valley visible from Abisko, is also one of the favorite sights for tourists.

Abisko provides shelter to the indigenous Sami community living in the Arctic and sub-Arctic parts of Norway, Sweden and many reindeer. About 70,000 Sami live in the arctic and subarctic parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula.
How and when to arrive?
This sky is inside the auroral oval. Therefore, mid-August to April is the best time to visit this place. It can be reached by daily passenger electric trains connecting Stockholm with the Norwegian city of Narvik, which also stops at Abisko Tourist Station. Abisko can also be reached by road via highway E10, which connects Kiruna and Narvik.
