Without the USA and Russia, the Open Skies Treaty would be useless in terms of security policy

“It happened: Russia has announced that it will leave the Open Skies treaty just like the USA. That would be bad for everyone, because less transparency always means less security – especially here in Europe. Russia would, for example, take the opportunity to fly over US military locations here in Germany for observation purposes. An incomprehensible decision, ”explains Matthias Höhn, chairman of the Subcommittee on Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation for the DIE LINKE parliamentary group on the occasion of Russia’s announcement that it wants to withdraw from the Open Skies contract. Höhn further:

“The remaining signatory states had six months to convince Moscow to withdraw their decision. Without the USA and Russia, the agreement would be useless in terms of security policy.

The Open Skies Treaty enables mutual observation flights over the entire territory of the member states – from Vladivostok to Vancouver. But political hardliners in Washington and Moscow have been torpedoing this important agreement for years. With the US leaving and the Russian announcement, the chances are very slim that the treaty will be preserved at all. “
