Without opposition, Morena approves rules for reelection of legislators

Without the presence of the majority of the opposition parties, the Plenum of the Chamber of Deputies approved a series of reforms that regulate the reelection of legislators for two consecutive periods.

These are changes to the general laws of Electoral Institutions and Procedures, and of Political Parties, in the matter of continuous election of female and male legislators, which it was approved with 254 votes in favor, 20 against and 3 abstentions, so he took turns in the Senate.

Although since 2014, legislators approved the political reform, with which the reelection of local and federal legislators is allowed, now it is sought to regulate the process in secondary legislation.

Senators may be re-elected once and federal deputies up to four times by the party or parties that nominated them, unless they have lost or relinquished their membership in the middle of office.

In the 2014 reform, it was also established that the State Constitutions must establish the re-election for up to a period of the municipal presidents, aldermen and trustees, as well as of the local deputies for four occasions, to add 12 years as a limit.

“Advantageous” rules for reelection

During the discussion, some lawmakers criticized this vote being held amid the epidemic of the coronavirus COVID-19.

The deputy Martha Tagle, of the Citizen Movement, condemned that Morena has put the project to a vote despite the absence of conditions and when the population is attentive to other issues.

The re-election, accused the deputy, “is contemplated in the Constitution but it is advantageous for you from Morena, for the elections of 2021, because as federal deputies you can be re-elected for the same position.”

However, the plenary session was held with the protest of various deputies that the discussion of this topic is carried out and that it would allow the Morena legislators to be re-elected and even to Social Meeting, which no longer has a record.

In his participation, the deputy Carlos Alberto Puente, from the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM) stated that “nobody is going to stay here automatically. There is no legislative deadline and I voted in favor so that every member of the legislature does not go through the learning curve. ”

Finally and after 40 minutes of discussion, Deputy Tonatiuh Bravo denounced that the draft of said opinion was presented just yesterday at the full meeting of the Political Coordination Board. “That is why Movimiento Ciudadano considers this to be an albazo,” he added.
