Without Early Intervention, Diabetes Management in Health Services is estimated at Rp. 199 Trillion

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – The impact of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus can erode the finances of BPJS Health, if participants are not treated very seriously.

Special and in-depth studies are needed, while changes in regulations by the government are also needed.

This was said by the Head of the Center for Health Economics and Policy Studies (CHEPS), University of Indonesia, Budi Hidayat in a webinar entitled Media Briefing “The Economic Burden of Diabetes and The Innovative Policy” held by CHEPS, Friday (13/11/2020).

Other speakers at the event were the Managing Director of BPJS Kesehatan representing Deputy Directors Ari Dwi Aryani and the Chairperson of the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (Perkeni), Ketut Suastika and Expert Staff of the Menkesk Mariya Mubarika who acted as moderators.

According to Budi, handling diabetes JKN incurs high costs with the majority of funding used to manage complications, considering that 57% of type 2 diabetes patients have one or more complications.

Then 74% of diabetes financing is used to treat diabetes-related complications and the cost to treat complications is 2x higher than non-complications.

“If there is no proper intervention from an early age, then treatment diabetes in health services it is estimated that it reaches Rp. 199 trillion and financing for complications alone reaches Rp. 142 trillion from Rp. 199 trillion, “Budi explained.

Budi continued, there are steps that can be taken to reduce complications and reduce complication financing diabetes that is, preventing complications in people who are already diagnosed diabetes with optimal therapy and prevent its occurrence diabetes in people who are not yet at risk diabetes.

Deputy Director of BPJS Kesehatan, Ari Dwi Aryani, said that the benefits of health insurance in the form of individual health services include promotional, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

Health services are implemented in stages according to medical indications and health facility competencies starting from the First Level Health Facilities (FKTP), namely puskesmas and clinics,” said Ari.
