With evergreen rhododendron will pay attention to lung cancer / Article / LSM.lv

On the eve of the International Lung Cancer Day, to draw the attention of the general public to the issues of lung cancer and treatment, the head of the Association of Lung Cancer Patients and Relatives, Harry Gals, will symbolically plant evergreen rhododendrons at Riga East Clinical University Hospital today, July 31.

The incidence of lung cancer in recent years is about the same – a little more than 1,000 people get sick every year, and the same number of people die from the disease every year, Gals pointed out.

One of the most acute problems among lung cancer patients is not visiting the doctor in time and going for tests. “About half of the patients turn to the doctor when nothing more can be drastically improved,” the head of the association noted.

Asked about the reasons why people postpone going to the doctor, Gals mentioned the culture and environment in society as a whole. “Politicians, doctors and sometimes me, at a time when we have to fight for something better, we immediately say – Europe is so good, there is a land of happiness, but we are bad. We also hear in the news all the time that everything is bad, and the potential patient may feel that nothing can be done in Latvian hospitals, ”admits the head of the association.

Gals emphasizes that this is not true:

There is a lot that can be done in Latvian hospitals, and it is in the last year that the state medical system has done a lot to better treat lung cancer patients. We want to say this with this rhododendron planting.

International Lung Cancer Day is celebrated on August 1. The planting of the symbolic rhododendron at the Riga East Clinical University Hospital will take place on Friday, July 31, at 12.00. Representatives of both the Association of Lung Cancer Patients and Relatives and the hospital will take part in the event.
