Winter Arrives in Russia: Updates on Regions Covered in Snow and Pre-Winter Season

Winter has come to the Asian part of Russia, and the pre-winter season has begun on European territory, in the Urals. The scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of the Russian Federation, Honored Meteorologist of the Russian Federation Roman Vilfand, spoke about this in a conversation with URA.RU.

“We can say that 50% of the territory of Russia is already covered with snow. Far East by 90%. The Kola Peninsula is almost entirely covered with snow, up to 10 cm high. There are signs of winter. And all this will not melt away. That is, winter has come to the Asian part of the country. In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, central Siberia, approximately half of the territory is covered with snow. Small, low, from 1 to 6 cm, snow fell on the European territory of the country – the Arkhangelsk region, the Nenets Autonomous District, the northeast of the Volga Federal District, Yamal,” explained Roman Vilfand.

The scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of the Russian Federation emphasized that a snowstorm is expected in the northeast of Komi on October 21 and 22 (Saturday and Sunday). “On October 21, 22 in the northeast of Komi there is heavy snow and blizzard with winds up to 17-22 m/s. A snowstorm is already an attribute of the winter regime. Although it must be said that the Asian part of the country has very warm weather. But it’s warm in the Yakut, Chukchi, and Taimyr ways. For example, in Taimyr the temperature is predicted to be 6-11 degrees higher than long-term values. This means that daytime temperatures there will only range from 0 to minus 6 degrees. Such a real warmth, an anomaly, deviations from the monthly average. This is the situation now in Yakutsk. There the daytime temperature is about 0, and the nighttime temperature is 7-8 degrees below zero. And the daytime should be minus 6 – minus 10, and the night minus 15 – minus 17 degrees,” added Vilfand.

According to the country’s honored meteorologist, the pre-winter season has begun in the European territory of Russia (in particular, in Moscow and the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk and Kaliningrad regions). “On the European territory of the Russian Federation, in the Urals, the pre-winter season has begun. It usually lasts from mid-October to mid-December. The weather at this time is changeable. There are often thaws or noticeable frosts. But the main sign of this pre-winter is that cyclones pass through the temperate latitudes of European Russia and the Urals, and with them precipitation falls, the sky becomes gloomy, the clouds are low, and the sun rarely appears. This period has arrived. Preparations for winter circulation are underway. The Urals have typical pre-winter weather. During the weekend in the northern regions of the Urals, night temperatures range from 0 to minus 5 degrees. On Tuesday, October 24, and Wednesday, October 25, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug will experience much lower temperatures at night, 3-8 degrees below zero. In more northern areas, temperatures range from minus 11 to minus 16. Daytime temperatures range from plus 1 to minus 4 degrees. It will rain, snow and sleet all the time. It is a little warmer in the south of the Urals. Saturday is perhaps the warmest day, 2-7 degrees. Subsequently, the temperature background will change. At night 0 – minus 5, during the day 0 – 5 degrees Celsius. There is more snow at night. During the day it rains and snows,” he noted.

At the same time, truly summer weather, according to Vilfand, still remains in the south of European Russia. “There are regions where there are still no signs of winter – these are the south of European Russia, the Krasnodar Territory, the Crimea. The weather there on weekends and Mondays is amazing. Real summer. The temperature is mostly 24-28 degrees, and even up to 30 in continental areas. Of course, the water temperature has already dropped noticeably. In Crimea it is 14-17 degrees, on the Black Sea coast it is 16-18, but air baths can be taken. Now the ultraviolet index is small, and this means that ultraviolet is useful, not harmful. Children can even sunbathe all day long,” he advised.

Warmth, the agency’s interlocutor added, remains in the Khabarovsk Territory. “At the beginning of next week, in the middle there will be very warm weather in the south of the Khabarovsk Territory and in Primorye. It’s 14-18 degrees there. And this warmth also determines the fact that in certain areas of our country an extreme level of fire danger remains. This is Dagestan, but this is not surprising. Irkutsk region, south of Khabarovsk Territory. An extreme fire danger class is predicted even at the beginning of next week,” Vilfand concluded.
