For example, recently the Indonesian government in a meeting of the ASEAN regional forum spoke about the conflict in the South China Sea.

Indonesia reminded ASEAN to refrain from provocative actions by a number of parties related to the South China Sea.

This was conveyed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Wamenlu) Mahendra Siregar while attending the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) meeting in the series of ASEAN Ministerial Meetings (AMM) and ASEAN Post Ministerial Conferences (PMC) on Friday (6/8/2021).

“ARF participating countries need to take advantage of this forum to familiarize the dialogue process in the region, build trust and bridge differences in perspectives, and reduce tensions between its members,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Mahendra, quoted from Tribunnews.com.

The Foreign Ministers highlighted the increasing intensity of rivalry between major powers during the pandemic.

Indonesia encourages ARF to translate dialogue into concrete cooperation, especially in the field of health resilience to support the SDGs as part of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

The Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs also emphasized the importance of all parties refraining from power projections and provocative actions that could increase tensions in the South China Sea, especially in the midst of a pandemic.

Indonesia calls on the international community to support ASEAN’s role in Myanmar and resolve all forms of disputes in the South China Sea in accordance with UNCLOS 1982.
