Willem II beats RKC in relegation under the watchful eye of 2,000 fans | NOW

Willem II booked an important victory in the fight against relegation in the first Eredivisie match with the public since the end of September on Friday. The Tilburg team won the Brabant derby against RKC Waalwijk 1-0.

Two thousand spectators were present at the match in the Koning Willem II Stadium. It was the first Eredivisie match with an audience since September 27.

Ten minutes after the break, Vangelis Pavlidis scored the only goal of the game. The Greek striker initially shot against his teammate Kwasi Wriedt, but let the Willem II fans cheer with his bet from the rebound.

Willem II also had the best chances for the opening goal. In the sixth minute, a goal from Wriedt was disallowed for offside and after half an hour a header by Sven van Beek hit the crossbar.

Pavlidis almost brought the home team to 2-0 halfway through the second half, but his shot from the edge of the box ended up on the post. Willem II’s victory was then hardly in danger, although Sylla Sow still got a chance on behalf of RKC.

For the first time since September 27, spectators were present at an Eredivisie match.

Willem II at one point from RKC

Thanks to the victory, Willem II is more firmly in fifteenth place. The team of coach Zeljko Petrovic now has three points ahead of number sixteen VVV-Venlo, which will visit Sparta Rotterdam on Saturday.

Willem II’s backlog at number fourteen RKC is now one point. The bottom two teams are relegated directly from the Eredivisie and the number sixteen plays play-offs for promotion / relegation.
