Will the much-discussed chicane in Paris-Roubaix look like this? Van der Poel certainly hopes not: “Is this a joke?”

The first images of the (already) famous chicane in Paris-Roubaix are circulating on social media. L’Equipe reports that the walk will look like this on Sunday and that divides opinions. This also applies to defending champion and top favorite Mathieu van der Poel. “Is this a joke?” he wonders out loud. Make your own judgment about the (possible) route.

Berteele: “This is much more dangerous for me”

Our man on the motorcycle, Carl Berteele, is not at all a fan of the concept circulating on social media.

“I immediately thought: it will be much more dangerous this way,” he opens his argument. “The chicane is after a descending section, so there is pressure from the rear anyway. Then the driving is very fast and this is just a knife.”

“In this way they want to make the riders come to a standstill.”

These are not hairpin bends, but this is an open knife.

Carl Berteele

No subtle left-right or a wide bend, the images show almost two hairpin bends.

“Sorry, but these are no longer hairpin bends, but it is an open knife. Especially with those fences. It is also much more dangerous for me on the motorcycle.”

Does Berteele see a better solution to prevent a dangerous battle before the chicane?

“Catch the cobblestone strip from the other side, then it is an ascending line at a lower speed. Or make a wide bend further before the Forest of Wallers, not 20 meters in front.”
