Michael B. Jordan will join Will Smith for the sequel to I’m legend, a project that will arrive 15 years after the premiere of the original film. In addition to starring in the film, both actors will be in charge of production under their companies Outlier Society and Westbrook Studios, respectively.
Details about the plot and who will sit in the director’s chair have yet to be revealed, but the screenwriters who adapted Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name for the 2007 film, Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich, will also be back.
“This will be crazy!” Smith wrote under the photograph of a desolate street where he tagged Jordan, confirming this new alliance.
Directed by Francis Lawrence I’m legend follows the story of Robert Neville (Smith), a virologist who is apparently the only survivor in New York after a virus transforms humans into bloodthirsty beasts. The ending that was shown in theaters showed how Neville sacrificed himself so that the cure could reach the rest of the world.
It’s unclear how Smith’s character will return, unless the new plot builds on the alternate ending that was included on the film’s DVDs. In it, instead of sacrificing himself, Neville frees the infected alpha female he had captured to develop the cure, abandoning scientific research and heading to a colony of humans.
