Will Mexico face a similar COVID situation as China? Explains Tec – El Financiero

Los COVID outbreaks hit countries around the world ahead of the holiday season. As Mexico faces its sixth wave of infections, China comes from a month of restrictions to contain the increase in cases.

The situation in China worries specialists from all over the world, being one of the most populous countries new variants are more likely to appear of vaccine-resistant viruses.

“When it comes to Current outbreak (COVID) in China, we want that addressed,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a briefing on Monday. “We know that whenever the virus spreads in nature, it has the potential to mutate and pose a threat to people around the world.

Bloomberg reported that this Dec. 23, China reported nearly 37 million infections in one day, up from 248 million cases so far this month.

Will the COVID situation in China be replicated in Mexico?

Reynalado Lara, an infectologist from Tecnológico de Monterrey, pointed out that the rebound of COVID infections in China is due to the country’s policy for managing the pandemic. Therefore, this situation will not necessarily repeat itself in the world.

“Their hospitals are full and they have a significant increase in cases (COVID). However, in China features they are different than the rest of the worldsaid the doctor.

He stressed that the reason China is facing a resurgence of cases and deaths is because the authorities have opted for strict confinement, which has left many people unvaccinated.

The situation in other countries of the world is different. In case of Mexico, 84 percent of the population has at least one vaccine against COVIDwhile the less stringent confinement measures meant that many people acquired immunity thanks to infections.

The specialist points out that due to the vaccination in Mexico and the spread of the virus, a herd immunity has been generated allows you to avoid increasingly serious cases of COVID. It should be noted that the Ministry of Health has stated that the sixth wave will be less aggressive than the previous ones in terms of mortality.

The Tec de Monterrey infectologist stressed that there are four measures to take into account to avoid complications from COVID during the sixth wave:
