Will Cristiano Ronaldo Return to the Premier Class? UEFA’s Stance and Changes in the Champions League Format

Will we see Cristiano Ronaldo playing in the premier class again soon? This question has come up in recent months after the transfer boom of numerous superstars took place last summer. The major Saudi clubs should therefore push for entry into the European Champions League. For industry giants such as Ronaldo, Sadio Mane and Neymar, all of whom now play in the desert state, this would give them the opportunity to prove their playing class in the uniform of clubs such as Al Nassr against Europe’s elite clubs.

UEFA stands by its position

Now the European Football Union has once again taken a stand on this issue and has once again rejected any speculation. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin’s statement to L’Equipe in August still stands, a UEFA spokesman said. At the time, Ceferin complained that this rumor had been spread “without us even being asked.” He made it clear: “Only European clubs can take part in the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League.” A Saudi journalist on the “X” platform (formerly “Twitter”) heated up speculation about the possible participation of the Saudi Arabian clubs in the CL and caused quite a stir.

Extensive changes in the CL format from 2024/25

The premier class will undergo a massive reform next season, which will be viewed critically by fans, coaches and players. Among other things, the Champions League will be increased from 32 to 36 participating clubs. In the future, the so-called “Swiss model”, a league format, will be played and a play-off round will be added before the round of 16. A total of 189 games will then be played, 64 more than before. The final will take place on May 31, 2025 in Munich.
