The year 2020, already rich in twists and turns, has not finished surprising us. Indeed, an asteroid should approach Earth on November 2. Even if the celestial object is without risk, the information makes react in the United States since the event must take place the day before the American election.
A new danger would hover on the horizon: an asteroid would head straight for Earth. But rest assured, the celestial object, named 2018VP1, is small, 2 meters by 91 centimeters, and would weigh around 15 kilos. So nothing to worry about.
What makes you react more, especially across the Atlantic, is the date on which the asteroid should “crash” on Earth (or graze it). According to the Center for Near Earth Objects Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the celestial object is expected to approach us on November 2, 2020, the day before the US election. Enough to stir up an electoral campaign already under tension.
According to the latest calculations from the European Space Agency (ESA), there is only a 1 in 240 chance that the asteroid will actually hit us, compared to a 1 in 193 chance last June. If this is ultimately the case, the celestial object should probably disintegrate as soon as it enters the atmosphere and give way to a shooting star. Perhaps American candidates will see it as a heavenly sign.
