The wife of The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan, who died on Thursday, hopes that his song Fairytale of New York will be at number one on the UK charts at Christmas. That would be a nice tribute, she said BBC.

Fairytale of New York is a duet that MacGowan recorded with Kirsty MacColl. The number is up If I Should Fall From Grace With Godthe third album by The Pogues from 1987. The song has now become a Christmas classic, but has never reached number one in Great Britain.

“It would be nice,” Victoria Mary Clarke said on the Today programme BBC Radio 4. MacGowan’s wife stated that she is “strongly in favor” of the song being number one at Christmas in memory of her husband. The song is now widely streamed in Great Britain and is in eighteenth place in the Official Charts.

Clarke, 57, compared the tumultuous love story of Fairytale of New York with her own marriage to MacGowan. “It’s not the romance that has gone wrong for the main characters. In the song they still love each other,” she said. “But life has gone wrong for them. I think that’s probably a bit like our story.”

‘He always bought me flowers’

MacGowan battled alcohol and drug addiction his entire life. He was addicted to heroin, among other things. “We’ve both suffered from his addiction, but you can still love even when you’re in that situation. And you can be just as desperately unhappy as you love,” Clarke said.

She also said that MacGowan was a romantic. “He always bought me flowers and told me every day that I looked beautiful.”

MacGowan died on Thursday at the age of 65 after a long period with all kinds of health problems caused by his addiction.
