Wide-Body Aircraft Prohibited from Landing at Juanda Airport, East Java

KOMPAS.com – Wide-body aircraft with a seating capacity of 314 to 452 passengers are prohibited from landing at Juanda International Airport, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java, by the Regional III Airport Authority Office.

This is due to the limitation of the runway which is still in the process of being repaired.

“It is said to be a ban, because we are limiting the load on the runway. So the runway that we are repairing and carrying out maintenance needs to be maintained, so that our large-bodied aircraft can reduce the burden,” said Head of the Regional III Airport Authority Office, M Mauludin, quoted from BetweenSaturday (11/6/2022).

Mauludin added that the restrictions on large-bodied aircraft from abroad were also due to coincide with the 2022 hajj season.

“After the hajj season is complete, we will re-evaluate the condition of the runway, whether large-bodied aircraft can land again, and we will see that in the next two weeks. Then we will optimize it again,” he said.

He targets that the runway repair and maintenance at Juanda International Airport will be completed in its entirety by July 2023, so that there will be no more restrictions or restrictions.

“For now, we prioritize hajj first, then alternate for other large-bodied aircraft,” he said.

Previously, Chairman of the East Java (Jatim) Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Adik Dwi Putranto asked the Ministry of Transportation to add flights (flight) abroad from and to Surabaya, using small-bodied aircraft, or narrow bodywith a maximum capacity of 200 people.

“This step is very urgent considering the information about the ban, because we have received complaints from a number of businessmen and businessmen who are members of the association of members of the East Java Chamber of Commerce,” said Adik.

He wants this problem not to affect the economy and tourism of East Java, because it has been trying to revive the economy after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are worried that if this condition is allowed to drag on, it will have a negative impact on East Java’s economic growth, especially tourism, because the number of foreign tourists entering East Java has started to improve and is climbing up,” he said.

Meanwhile, data from the Central Java Statistics Agency in April 2022, shows that there were 1,468 visits by foreign tourists to East Java through the Juanda entrance.

This condition shows an increase compared to conditions in March 2022 which only amounted to 57 foreign tourists.
