Why Postepay Doesn’t Work at Night: Exploring the Surprising Reason

An example of Postepay, from the Poste website

Why does Postepay struggle to work or just doesn’t seem to want to be used at night? Let’s find out the bizarre reason together.

Many malign the Post Office, they love to speak ill of it; many of those with large bank accounts scoff at the old postal service and its antiquated checking accounts. In reality, looking more closely at the question, the Post Office offers an unexpected multiplicity of uses. And they have an extremely wide range of users ranging from penniless students to (many) retirees suspicious of current accounts.

In this context, there is perhaps no more used instrument of the Post Office than Postepay, alongside the old-fashioned postal savings book. Convenient tool for online purchases, very versatile, capable of being modulated according to needs and purposes of use; for example, it can be used to receive pay, it can be ‘enhanced’ for VAT numbers, it can be used as a bank deposit or even as a card for purchases abroad. One, none, one hundred thousand Postepay.

Many wonder why Postepay refuses to operate at night; or if it does, there are obvious and very strong difficulties. This is a cause connected to the functioning of the digital circuit of the Post Office, much more ‘normal’ than it might seem.

In fact, the digital circuit of the Post Office provides for automatic updates at specific times of the day; certain hours and are usually night hours are occupied by monumental updates of the massive postal system, known for its (non) reliability.

When the Post Office is not operational: all times

Usually Postepay is not operational between 2 and 4 in the night, the second working day of the week. And therefore usually on Tuesday night. Normally however, always during the night, there is a 10-minute update from 2 in the morning; in some cases it lasts for a quarter of an hour. Postepay then becomes inaccessible.

No other prepaid card service makes access inaccessible for such a long period of time; really a unique of the system, typical of the Post Office. Any bank that made access impossible, in certain hours (two, in the case of Tuesdays), would be branded as incompetent and ignored by customers. This is not the case with the Post Office.

What would happen if, for example present abroad, a person had an urgent need to pay for a restaurant where he lingered until two in the morning? Or if it’s at a club event or concert that easily extends into 2am and beyond? For the Post Office it is not possible; and ATM withdrawals would not be possible either. A nice headache, to be carefully considered when acquiring a Postepay.
