Why is Apple changing its syringe emoji?

Its use has become widespread this year on social networks, but British politicians have not yet fully adopted it on their Twitter account, when it could become a major tool of digital communication: the syringe emoji.

Apple has thus decided to give it a makeover and adapt it to the coronavirus pandemic. The emoji abandons its red color, in reference to the blood test, to fill with a transparent liquid in order to correspond more to the problem of the moment: the vaccination against Covid-19.

The new syringe emoji available in IOS version 14.5

Users will be able to take advantage of this new skin with the next IOS 14.5 update in the spring, although some lucky ones are already enjoying the beta. Design changes remain common at Apple depending on the news reports the site Emojipedia, who spotted and analyzed this modification.

This emoji has its importance in digital communication around vaccination in the UK and its change in appearance is anything but insignificant. Many Twitter users are starting to post one or two syringe emojis on their profiles to indicate that they have been vaccinated and encourage their followers to do the same.

Willingly or not, Apple also intends to fight through this change against certain misconceptions that associate vaccination with blood. This minor change will be significant in the coming weeks with the opening of vaccination to all adults in the UK, for whom digital communication will be essential.
