Why did Donald Trump actually go so resolutely against TikTok and decide to destroy him as well, as he tries to do at Huawei? Is it because TikTok is a major threat to the security of the United States? Or because the tiktokors make fun of Trump and ruin his election campaign, including that a strong social network can be a threat to re-election when he’s not in control, as Facebook has? Another variant is quite probable.
The whole case is part of the US-China trade wars, and the problems for TikTok (but also for other Chinese networks and companies such as WeChat and Tencent) are just a way for Trump to get attention and success. Including a small side effect in eliminating competition for Facebook. He is very accommodating to Trump and this “service” is relatively essential for its further development.
TikTok was an unknown social network two years ago. It was established in 2016 in China under the name Douyin. In 2017, a worldwide version called TikTok was launched, but without much success. Everything did not change until August 2018, when its owners bought the then popular application (and social network) Musical.ly targeted at the American market and began the expansion.
