Why do New York’s buildings stay on all night?

While we are always talking about ecology and energy savings, many office buildings stay on all night in New York. Here is the reason.

A burst of energy every night in New York

  • As you walk around New York City at night, or look at photos of the Skyline taken at night, you will see that many buildings are brightly lit. Entire floors remain lit all night long even though there are no or very few employees in the building. This is particularly the case in the district of Financial District, with the tower One World Trade Center.
  • When you see all these offices on, you obviously think of an immense waste of energy … The company Con Edison, the New York equivalent of EDF, even did the calculations: it is estimated that, at night, 5200 megawatts of energy. electricity is flying every hour in New York!

Why do the buildings remain lit at night?

  • Faced with this debauchery of energy, there is, however, an explanation. If the buildings of New York remain lit, it is first of all to be visible from planes. At night, the air traffic of the airports of New York-JFK, Newark and LaGuardia continues, whether for passengers and freight. And even if the air corridors are well defined, it is better to ensure the best possible visibility for the pilots.
  • Same thing for helicopters flying over New York : Manhattan has 2 helipads and pilots must also appreciate the distances from the surrounding buildings. The lighting of buildings is therefore a matter of safety.

A subject that is debating in New York

  • Nonetheless, the issue of nighttime lighting of office buildings remains an issue in New York. At the time of piloting with instruments and GPS, some consider that the red lights placed at the top of buildings are more than sufficient.
  • In 2015, a city councilor introduced a bill for office buildings to turn off their open-plan spaces and their offices not in use at night, to save energy. Animal rights activists have also come to the rescue, arguing that building lights disturb birds and cause fatal crashes. But the opponents are making their voices heard!
  • New York is therefore moving very slowly and the buildings should stay on for a long time!
