Two probes sent to the Moon this week had very different destinations.: while the Indian Chandrayaan-3 was the first to make a descent on the lunar south pole — making India the fourth country in the world to make a landing, after the USSR, USA and China — the Russian Luna-25 (photo) left the control of the Roskosmos agency and crashed into the surface of the Earth’s satellite. Why did India’s lunar mission succeed and Russia’s failed?

For specialist Raquel Missagia, the Indian space program, one of the fastest growing in recent years, has learned from recent mistakes: since 2009, there have been two unsuccessful landing attempts until the success of the third probe.

In the case of Russia, Luna-25 was the country’s first lunar mission in 47 years – that is, the last one had been in 1976, when the USSR still existed.
