WHO: yellow fever kills 172 in Nigeria

An epidemic of yellow fever, detected in November, killed 172 in Nigeria, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday, which reported 530 suspected cases of the disease in the country.

“As of November 24, the epidemic had been detected in five states of Nigeria (Delta, Enugu, Bauchi, Benue and Ebonyi), the organization’s spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva.

“A total of 530 suspected cases have been recorded, 48 of which were confirmed by laboratory tests. All of these 530 suspected cases resulted in the death of 172 people, ”he added.

Yellow fever is caused by a virus transmitted by the bites of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus). The disease is preventable with a single dose of yellow fever vaccine, which provides lifelong immunity.
