The ceremony, now in its 63rd edition, was conducted by the South African actor and comedian Trevor Noah, guest of the well-known program “The Daily Show”, and took place without an audience due to the coronavirus : tables were arranged in front of the stage at which the protagonists of the evening were seated, all in masks. It was an edition that will also be remembered for its music records, as well as for the unusual atmosphere. Beyoncé won her 28th Grammy by becoming the woman who won the most in the history of the award. Only the conductor Georg Solti has more than her, 31. She took two more home: the one for the best music video for “Brown Skin Girl” and the one for the best rap performance with Megan Thee Stallion, the Texan rapper chosen as Best Emerging Artist.

Taylor Swift became the first female artist to win Disc of the Year three times thanks to Folklore , released during the lockdown; the others had been Fearless in 2010 and 1989 in 2016. Only three musicians did the same: Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

The success of Billie Eilish also continued, who dominated the ceremony last year by winning five awards, including that for the emerging artist: this year she won Best Recording of the Year with “Everything I Wanted” and for Best Song Written for a Visual Medium with “No Time To Die,” written for the James Bond film due out later this year.

During the evening, which lasted three hours, there were many performances, more than usual, starting with that of Harry Styles who opened with “Watermelon Sugar”, which then won Best Pop Performance of the Year: Styles has become this way the first of the One Direction to win a Grammy, either alone or as a group. Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Haim, Bruno Mars, BTS, Cardi B with Megan Thee Stallion and many others followed.
