Europe is currently the epicenter of the corona pandemic. Due to the abandonment of the corona measures and the low vaccination coverage in some European countries, the number of corona cases has been rising for weeks.

59 percent of all corona cases worldwide and 48 percent of all corona deaths were diagnosed in Europe and Central Asia last week. according to Hans Kluge, regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Last week, 24,000 new corona deaths were reported in the region – 12 percent more than a week earlier. “If we stay on this trajectory, we could see another half a million Covid-19 deaths in Europe and Central Asia by February 1 next year,” Kluge warns.

He calls the current situation “alarming” and calls for action. Kluge breaks a lance for the use of face masks. Its consistent use can save many victims, he believes. “Precautions do not infringe on people’s freedom, but make that freedom possible.”

The WHO director also praises the effectiveness of the corona vaccines. “The vaccines do exactly what they were supposed to do: they prevent serious illness and death.”
