The executive director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Mike Ryan, said Monday from Geneva that with the emergence of numerous cases of coronavirus in Italy, South Korea and Iran, the world should be preparing for further outbreaks from China and eventually the possibility of a pandemic.

“It is time to do everything necessary to prepare for a pandemic,” said Ryan, who is leading the WHO health emergency program.

However, he clarified what was said by stating that “it is too early” to declare it at this time and that they are trying to avoid that situation with the public health efforts that are being implemented.

Ryan’s statements occur at a time when cases outside of China have multiplied. In Italy there are more than 220 infected and at least seven dead. In South Korea, 231 new cases were registered on Monday, raising the number in that Asian country to more than 830.
