Reassuring news on the Covid-19 pandemic. Even if the virus and its variants are still circulating, the WHO announced a drop in mortality linked to Covid-19 since January, during a press conference this Wednesday, April 26, 2023.

In France, the indicators are also quite good, with a drop in the incidence rate and the hospitalization rate, according to data from French Public Health.

– 95% death rate

The world body wanted to take stock of the situation, while it will publish “next week” a strategic preparedness and intervention plan, which aims to guide countries over the next two years to sustainable and long-term management of the epidemic. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the WHO, spoke on this subject.

We are very pleased with the sustained decline in reported deaths from Covid-19, which have fallen by 95% since the start of the year. However, some countries are seeing increases, and in the past four weeks, 14,000 people have lost their lives to this disease.”

However, the WHO estimates that one in ten infections leads to post-Covid disease, so hundreds of millions of people will need longer-term care.

Next end of the public health emergency?

The WHO says the virus will continue to evolve and is still capable of causing new waves of illness and death, “as illustrated by the emergence of the new variant XBB.1.16« .

We remain hopeful that within this year we will be able to declare the end of Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international concern.

Before recalling that this virus was here “to stay”, and all countries will have to learn to manage it at the same time as other infectious diseases.
