The online supermarkets are currently struggling with high demand, we have checked the delivery situation with the individual providers. The big overview.
The food supply is guaranteed in Germany, so the trade association Germany and the large discounter and supermarket chains agree. The Federal Association of the German Food Industry also confirms: “The supply of people in our country with sufficient and high quality food is guaranteed. “In local branches there are still gaps on the shelves due to increased demand and rash hamster purchases. Both the transport of the articles to the branches and the occasional clearing of the goods on the shelves prove to be a bottleneck. Some items also experience delays due to traffic jams at the borders.
In these times, it helps retailers to relieve supply chains, so it is advisable to do grocery shopping online. If necessary, this can also be recommended as a supplement. Because often one or the other article can still be obtained in online retail, which is currently out of stock in many stores. The infamous toilet paper, for example.
With the exception of Bringmeister, Getnow, Real and Picnic, the author placed a test order with a private need for a family of four in all supermarkets. Only the availability and delivery status up to the last order step was checked at the aforementioned providers.
Local supply is prioritized: first the branches, then the online customer
As local suppliers, Rewe and Real must be able to guarantee the supply of the population in the vicinity of their branches. Thus, both tie up only limited capacities for online orders. To put it simply, it is more important at the moment that goods are on the shelves than to prepare deliveries for online trading. The majority of the population continues to get stationary in shops.
Tip: Before ordering, check whether a delivery slot is available
Most providers place a button in the upper area of the shop that can be used to check whether free pick-up or delivery dates are still available. Customers should definitely check here whether an order is even possible. Otherwise, the shopping cart reports at the end that the order cannot be completed due to a lack of free dates. Amazon, Myenso and Mytime do not work with delivery slots, with these providers there is no need to check in advance.
Many providers activate delivery slots about a week in advance, usually at midnight, but many have already extended the period.
Rewe online shop: Nationwide, in the vicinity of the branch
Rewe delivers the entire supermarket range itself, but each order must be able to be assigned to a branch. Pick-ups are prepared directly in the branches, according to an employee in the store, only a limited amount of pick-ups are accepted, because personnel capacities are urgently needed to put them on the shelves.
- Regional delivery, regionally different assortment, since delivery is mostly from the branch assortment.
- Status: Sporadically possible to order, depending on the market. Deliver, but current dates sold out quickly until April 3, 2020
- Pick-ups are also possible, depending on the market. But current dates are quickly sold out up to and including April 3, 2020
Practical tip: Pick-up dates can be postponed despite the selection. The branches have a limited capacity to prepare for pickups and deliveries. As long as the order status is open, the delivery is not ready for collection or the delivery date is not fixed. Keep an eye on the app or website, the date will be updated as soon as the order has actually been scheduled for fulfillment.
Mytime supermarket: delivers nationwide
Mytime delivers everything nationwide, both fresh products and dry goods. This makes Mytime the second and last supplier alongside Rewe to deliver the entire range nationwide.
- Central delivery, nationwide identical assortment
- Status: Order possible, current delivery times between twelve and 25 days
- Orders in the fresh product range are only possible with a delivery date from April 17th, 2020
- Orders in the dry range are only possible with a delivery date from April 2nd, 2020
Practical tip: Mytime differentiates between deliveries with fresh goods such as meat, vegetables and fruit from refrigeration and the so-called dry range. Customers who only order in the dry range can currently choose an earlier delivery date, as soon as a fresh item is in the shopping cart, the delivery time increases.
Myenso: Delivers nationwide
Myenso offers a full but small supermarket range. The supplier delivers its dry range nationwide, fresh products only regionally. Myenso is the only supermarket known to us that works according to a cooperative model. Customers can become partners here, but do not have to.
- Central delivery, supplies dry assortment nationwide, fresh assortment only in Berlin, Bremen, Bochum, Bottrop, Dortmund, Dresden, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Erlangen, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Fürth, Gelsenkirchen, Gladbeck, Hamburg, Hanover, Herne, Cologne, Leipzig, Leverkusen, Mühlheim an der Ruhr, Munich, Nuremberg, Oberhausen, Recklinghausen and Stuttgart.
- Status: order possible. Shipping takes place according to the order information after 3-4 working days, taking into account the package duration, our test order should arrive by the end of the week.
Practical tip: Register before ordering, as the range is not visible beforehand.
Real food shop: regionally in the vicinity of a branch
real offers a large supermarket range with fresh and dry items, the list of participating markets is not visible. We will insert them here as soon as we have the list. Interested customers will be shown when entering their own zip code whether a delivery or pick-up service is available in a nearby market.
- Local delivery to customers from branches or collection in branches. Not nationwide, only available in participating markets.
- Status: Ordering in different markets is not possible. Delivery dates were no longer available on March 22nd, customers should take a look again the next day.
In addition to the grocery shop, Real also operates one Market placewho has a very limited range of food. The affiliated dealers all deliver nationwide.
Picnic: delivery in North Rhine-Westphalia
Picnic Like Rewe, it has its own delivery infrastructure and delivers the entire supermarket range itself. Articles from the dry and fresh range are available.
- Delivery only regionally in North Rhine-Westphalia, check by entering the post code.
- Status: Ordering still possible in individual cases, supplier warns of fast delivery slots.
Getnow: Delivery from the metro, only regional
The startup Getnow cooperates with the Metro wholesale stores for traders and uses their warehouse in the branches to fulfill the orders. The range includes fresh products and dry goods.
- Regional delivery from metro markets in Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Essen, Hanover and Frankfurt as well as in the Ruhr area in Essen and Mühlheim.
- Status: Orders possible depending on the market, delivery slots can be quickly assigned
Amazon Pantry, Fresh and Prime Now
Amazon delivers nationwide supermarket items from the dry range through the Pantry program as well as from the marketplace. In Berlin and Munich, the fast deliveries via Prime-Now are also available on the same day. The complete supermarket assortment including fresh items delivers Amazon Fresh, the program is currently available in Berlin and Munich.
- Status: Pantry orders are processed relatively normally with a few days delivery time, Prime Now is booked up quickly but still possible in isolated cases. In the test, no Amazon Fresh delivery slots were available in Berlin or Munich until April 18. The Amazon booking calendar ends on this day.
