WHO: Europe can fight viruses without lockdown

– With basic national and other targeted infection control measures, we are today much better equipped to gain control over new flares of virus infection, said Hans Kluge, head of the World Health Organization’s Europe branch, at a press conference on Thursday.

– We can deal with the virus and keep the economy and education systems going, he added. Kluge still warns against the new wave of infection that is going on now.

– The virus is ruthless, and is now increasing again in Europe, he warned.

In the last two months, there has been a steady increase in new cases of infection. In the first week of August, 40,000 more people became infected than in the first week of June, according to the WHO.

An average of 26,000 new cases of infection are now reported in Europe every day, the organization reports.

– But we are not where we were in February, we can handle the infection situation differently now than when covid-19 first occurred, he said.

The WHO continues to recommend good hand hygiene, social distance and tracking and testing programs as the best measures to prevent infection.

The WHO’s Europe region comprises 55 countries and has so far registered close to four million cases of infection and 215,000 coronary deaths.
