A federal judge on Thursday ordered whistleblower Chelsea Manning to be released from prison. Manning was detained for refusing to testify in a lawsuit surrounding WikiLeaks.
Manning must be released immediately from the judge. A request by the former soldier to cancel fines previously received for the refusal of the testimony was rejected. Instead, an amount of $ 256,000 ($ 229,000) is required of her.
Why she is released is unknown. On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, several media outlets reported that Manning attempted suicide in her cell. Allegedly hospitalized afterwards.
The whistleblower was detained for refusing to testify in a WikiLeaks case. Manning spoke out against the trial with a grand jury, consisting of a group of civilians and a witness, who is allowed to hear witnesses without the presence of a lawyer. “The idea that there is such a thing as an independent jury is outdated,” she said earlier.
Manning has been detained before. In 2010, as an intelligence officer in Iraq, she leaked sensitive information to WikiLeaks. In 2013, Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for this, but she was released in 2017 after then-US President Barack Obama pardoned.
