Whisper from the Big Shell: Markéta Magidová’s Visual-Musical Project at Pardubice’s Automatic Mills

Markéta Magidová chose the Pardubice object of the Automatic Mills, to which Gočár’s gallery has recently moved, for her visual-musical project (together with a musician performing under the stage name MXTXC) Whisper from the Big Shell, which can be seen until September 10.

In order to maintain a certain continuity between the two elements, the artist cites in each of the three upholstered digital paintings a certain element that comes from the original equipment of the industrial building. In each of the three paintings that form the core of the entire project, you can see, for example, a fragment of an electric motor with a pump, which stands in front of the entrance to the gallery and slightly evokes the works of Karel Nepraš.

Triangle shape

However, Magidová involved three children in the whole event, who catch sounds from the ether through red bent tubes. In the second of the paintings, a boy and a girl listen to imaginary music from seashells, and they decorate the inventory number, as is the case with machines and equipment in factories. In the third piece, the author combined the shape of shells and machinery into one listening instrument.

All three panels on which the paintings are placed form a triangle shape. So the visitor never sees everything at once, he has to discover and find.

Everything is complemented by a set of wooden chairs, and a sheet of paper with a poem is placed on each of them. So one suddenly walks between them and reads. When you perceive verses like “the dirty sun shines through a thousand windows into the squinting eyes of the seamstress, the second awakening”, it undoubtedly evokes different feelings, or even visions, in him. The impression is further complemented by the impressionistic musical background of the above-mentioned composer.

However, art conceived in this way can function in a certain vastness of space, i.e. in its openness. In short, you can’t put it in a block of flats in the hallway by the bathroom. This is its advantage, but also a certain curse.
