where and how can spaniards travel

The improvement in the indicators of the pandemic and the high levels of vaccination have led many countries to review travel restrictions in recent weeks and make the entry conditions for tourists more flexible. Most of them have progressively opened their international borders, others have chosen to eliminate the obligation to present additional diagnostic tests, and some others have opted to eliminate any access requirement.

The restrictions change almost daily and doubts hover over Spanish travelers. What do I need to enter Portugal? Will they require a negative PCR upon arrival in Italy? Can I go to the United States? And to Australia? Is there any country that keeps its borders closed?

European countries without entry restrictions

Can you imagine traveling without the need to show any documents when crossing the border? As spring break approaches, more and more countries have chosen to fully lift entry restrictions and allow free access for travelers.

This is the case of some states of the European Union such as Ireland, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia, although the latter still requires certain tourists to fill in the passenger location form.

After these four countries – the first to free their borders – other states have joined the list. They are Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic. For their part, those who wish to enter the Netherlands must only fill out a health declaration form before flying, which indicates whether the traveler has any symptoms of coronavirus infection.

Spaniards can enter freely without having to present health documents in other countries of the Old Continent, beyond the European Union, such as Great Britain, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.

European countries that require documentation

A majority of states, despite having left behind the strict border controls that once included quarantines, require Spaniards -and other Europeans- to meet certain requirements. They are being fully vaccinated, having passed covid-19 or providing negative results of tests carried out before traveling.

In this sense, in general terms, all the remaining countries of the European Union require some of the following documents upon entry: the presentation of the valid European Vaccination Certificate -known as a covid passport-, in which it is shown that they have received the complete guideline; an official document that certifies having overcome the disease, or to be in possession of an official certificate that attests to the negative result of a test carried out before starting the trip.

Those who travel beyond Europe in the coming weeks will find notable differences depending on the country

Italy, France and Austria require those who do not have any of the first two documents to present a negative PCR carried out in the 72 hours prior to arrival, or an antigen test carried out in the previous 48 hours.

Portugal, Belgium, Greece, Cyprus and Croatia, which also require PCR, reduce the antigen test time to 24 hours. Those who travel to Cyprus, in addition, must obtain the CYprusFlightPass two days before starting the journey -if they use the airway-, and those who intend to enter Croatia are recommended to complete the Entercroatica before departure.

Germany and Finland, meanwhile, require any of the two diagnostic tests carried out 48 hours in advance.

Four states only allow PCR tests: Latvia, Poland (48 hours in advance), Malta and Slovakia (both 72 hours in advance). The last three also ask to fill in the traveler location form.

intercontinental travel

Those who plan to travel beyond Europe in the coming weeks will find notable differences depending on the country. In the American continent, Mexico, for example, does not have any type of entry restriction for foreigners, while the United States requires anyone who wants to enter the country to have the complete accredited vaccination schedule. Japan remains closed to foreign tourists. Only admits travelers for study, work or business

Likewise, it is essential to have a negative result of a PCR or antigen test carried out one day before flying, and to present the contact details of the airline passengers, in order to be located in the event of positives on the plane.

Morocco’s requirements are similar to those of the United States: be vaccinated and show the corresponding certificate, fill out a form and undergo a PCR within 48 hours prior to boarding.

After two years practically isolated from the outside world, Australia reopened its international borders in February to all those tourists with visas vaccinated against the coronavirus. The European digital certificate is valid, that is, the international QR code. The Australia Travel Declaration and a digital passenger declaration must be completed within 72 hours of departure.

Japan remains closed to foreign tourists. Since the beginning of March, border restrictions have been eliminated for those who travel to the country for study, work or business reasons, in which case they must have, among other documents, business certificates.

China, for its part, remains de facto isolated. The demands of the country, including those of flying on a direct route from Spain to China and the high demands, which include quarantine, make travel practically unfeasible.
