When Mecca, Jeddah and Medina start turning green… Page all

KOMPAS. com – The historic moment came when satellite images showed green vegetation covering some areas Saudi Arabian West Region.

Specifically, parts of Saudi Arabia have seen rainfall multiple times since December 2022.

The rain has a high intensity with a much longer period than in previous years.

The high rainfall is caused by a low-pressure air current (depression) at an unusual angle across Egypt and heading north.

The mountainous area is starting to turn green

Over western Saudi Arabia, it causes repeated atmospheric instabilities and coincides with the expansion of the Red Sea depression, as well as the flow of moist air currents in the atmosphere.

After this unusual rainfall, the mountainous areas concentrate in the west Saudi Arabia is starting to go green.

Local residents also capture rare views of expanses of greenery on the Saudi Arabian drylands.

Saudi Arabian Desert Greening Program

Saudi Arabia is also currently working on greening the desert Saudi Green Initiative (SGI).

Quoted from Arab newsSGI, launched in March 2021, is the largest ever greening project in the country, aiming to plant 450 million trees by 2030.

By the end of 2021, around 10 million trees have been planted in 13 regions.

To counter a potential danger urban sprawlThe Saudi government has set a specific SGI goal to harmoniously incorporate green space into urban sprawl, including parks and greenery within the Kingdom’s desert city limits.

These efforts will not only help curb rising temperatures, but will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve air quality.

The SGI roadmap is also designed to halt land degradation, conserve unique biodiversity, and maintain limited water resources in countries with low rainfall and low groundwater.

Currently, Saudi Arabia has 15 protected areas due to their biodiversity.
