When is the NBA returning? Schedule and mode of restart in Disney World

The NBA season is set to continue at the end of July after a long break. SPOX has collected the most important information about the schedule and the mode of the restart in Disney World for you.

After more than three months without a game, there has finally been a plan for a few weeks how the 19/20 season should be continued and ended. There are still details to be clarified, but you can get a pretty good picture.

The NBA stopped playing on March 11 after Rudy Gobert (Utah Jazz) tested positive for the corona virus. After that, they spent months looking for a solution how to start the season again. Despite a number of complications, there is now one that the NBA was able to agree on with the NBPA players’ union.

When does the 2020 NBA season start again?

  • Beginning of the regular season: 30th July
  • (Possible) qualification tournament: 15.-16. August
  • Start of the playoffs: 17. August
  • Beginning of the conference semifinals: 31. August
  • Start of the Conference Finals: 15. September
  • Start of the NBA Finals: 30. September
  • (Possible game 7 of the finals): October 13th

The data were primarily from The Athletic-Reporter Shams Charania, who added that this is a preliminary plan.

All games are scheduled to take place at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida. The teams start training in their own markets in early July, and later in the month they travel to Orlando for a full training camp after testing.

NBA Restart: Which teams are in Orlando?

A total of 22 teams are represented at the restart in Orlando. This includes the 16 teams that were in playoff positions at the time of the interruption, as well as six other teams that still have a mathematical chance of reaching eighth place. Five of them play in the Western Conference.

NBA: How does the mode work on restart?

First of all, every team in Orlando will play eight regular season games, regardless of how many games have been played by then. The playoff positions can then be derived from the balance sheet at the end of the regular season. However, there is one special feature.

If the ninth placed in both conferences is more than four games behind the eighth placed, then the eighth placed is automatically qualified for the playoffs. If the difference is smaller, however, a qualifying tournament will take place between places 8 and 9. The team with the poorer record has to win both direct duels to reach the playoffs, while the team with the better record has a single win.

In the playoffs, the NBA will then return to their usual format with best-of-seven series in all rounds.
