when Hip Hop “provokes” Vivaldi

New musical evening with Angers pushes the sound season 2! After Rosemary Standley and Yaël Naim, France 3 Pays de la Loire offers you new concerts in exceptional places in the city such as the Château d’Angers or the Museum of Natural Sciences. On Wednesday, January 26 at 11:05 p.m.

What could be better than dancing, music and singing to see the most beautiful monuments of our heritage in a different way! This is what “Angers pushes the sound” offers. Going beyond simple recordings and offering real musical creations is the objective of this musical series.

After a remarkable first season, the program returns to France 3 Pays de la Loire to once again transport you to exceptional places to the rhythm of the voices and instruments of passionate artists.

From the sweet melody of City of Stars, soundtrack to the film La La Land performed by Thibault Cauvin at the Château d’Angers to the latest album by Lo’Jo at the Museum of Natural Sciences, passing through the music of Henry Pucell reasoning in the attics of Saint -Jean with Les Arts Florissants, this new season will take us on a journey.

Folia, the meeting of tapestry, hip hop dance and baroque music

Dancers move slowly. The march is chaotic then it becomes movement and dance to the music of Vivaldi. The choreographer Mourad Merzouki -figure of the hip hop milieu- the company Cage and the Concert of the Hostel Dieu take possession of the Jean Lurcat museum.

This place houses the Chant du Monde tapestry,

a personal vision of the impressive tapestry of the Apocalypse which is on display at the Château d’Angers. These two works tell us stories of life and can be viewed as comic strips, they make the link between history and modernity, a thin thread that Mourad Merzouki knew how to draw to design “Folia a creation of creation”

Director Alexinho Mougeolle, also a choreographer, has succeeded in highlighting natural affinities and common themes explored in dance and tapestry: death, purgatory, biodiversity, great human conquests, the apocalypse.

The bet, if not the challenge displayed by the choreographer was to “cause” baroque music, a repertoire not well known to the public, through hip-hop dance, to enrich it with electronic sounds and additional music. A kind of rejuvenation to the folias born in the 15th century, a dance that has inspired more than 150 composers, from Lully to Rachmaninoff. Vivaldi’s chosen folia is one of the most virtuoso.

Folias and follies are the very essence of this show: a journey from southern Italy to the new world, from the baroque repertoire to today’s music. There is great diversity and crazy modernity in the Baroque repertoire between the 17th and 18th centuries. Some music belongs to a scholarly repertoire, like the music of Vivaldi, and others come from dance, like the tarantellas. From this interbreeding and the meeting between Mourad Merzouki and Franck-Emmanuel Comte, leader of the Concert de l’Hostel Dieu, was born “Folia”.

I also wanted to make the barrier that often separates dancers and musicians porous, by integrating the latter into the choreography. The challenge of this new adventure is to surprise the public and erase stereotypes!

Artistic bet but also human. In “Folia”, the abilities of each dancer intertwine with the image while their personal universes become only a trait of character.

What remains are the emotions that are the lifeblood of this crazy choreography.

The little prince of the guitar Thibault Cauvin makes “his cinema” at the Château d’Angers

Thibault Cauvin was born with a guitar. The whole world wants to hear the “little prince of the six strings”, the one who at the age of 20 was the most successful guitarist in the world -36 international prizes- he chose the residence of King René, the castle of Angers for a concert full of sweetness and melancholy. He interprets the music “City of star” from the film “la la land” which inspired him.

The musician has already proven his love for cinema. In 2021 he produced “Film”, an experimental project whose pretext was the major themes of cinema. To revisit them, he connects his classical guitar to various effects and sound pedals, inspired by electric guitars.

But the classic remains his true passion. After devoting albums to the great classical composers Scarlatti, Albéniz and then Vivaldi, he pays homage to Leo Brouwer, a Cuban composer who wrote a cycle played by guitarists all over the world.

In February 2022, “À Cordes et à Coeur”, the autobiographical book by Thibault co-written with François Deletraz, writer and historical cultural journalist from Le Figaro, will be released by Éditions du Rocher. In this book, Thibault recounts his unique journey, his vision of music, and entrusts us with his concerns and various questions.

In November 2022, an album dedicated to works for lute by Johann Sebastian Bach is expected.

In Angers, it is the Saint Jean attics that have the favor of “flourishing arts”

Located in the heart of the Doutre district, on the quays of the Maine, a few minutes from the city center of Angers, the Saint-Jean hospital complex built in the 12th century constitutes a sumptuous decor that goes perfectly with the music religious. This is no doubt why the ensemble “Les arts Florissants” has chosen to perform church pieces such as Henry Purcell’s “Anthem for the Chapel Royal”.

Greniers Saint Jean, a marvelous ensemble whose superb artistic unity has often been admired by all archaeologists and scholars, the finest example of medieval hospital architecture in France, the foundation of which received the royal patronage of Henry II Plantagenêt

Doctor Guignard Mayor of Angers 1889

Founded in 1979 by William Christie, The Flourishing Arts are one of the most recognized baroque music ensembles in the world.
Faithful to the interpretation on old instruments, this formation – which takes its name from a small opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier – played a pioneering role in rediscovering European music of the 17th and 18th centuries, represented by Handel, Charpentier, Monteverdi, Rameau, Bach or Purcell.

Today, Les Arts Florissants offer around a hundred concerts each year on the biggest French and international stages. A rich program, carried by exceptional musicians from all over the world to interpret this repertoire under the direction of William Christie and Paul Agnew… and bring to life this “Arts Flo style” recognizable among a thousand.

Over the years, the ensemble has extended its activities to two other passions of William Christie: the art of gardens and heritage. A transdisciplinary and meaningful development, placed under the sign of transmission, which in 2016 enabled the Arts Florissants project to obtain the “Centre Culturel de Rencontre” label. It is in Thiré, in Vendée, that this adventure is built around three flagship projects: remarkable gardens by William Christie, the Logis du Bâtiment and the Quartier des Artistes, which offer a program open to all throughout the year.

Also on the program for this musical evening, we will follow Noëmi Waysfeld & Christian-Pierre La Marca at Ronceray Abbey: perfect harmony between the powerful and sensitive voice of Noëmi Waysfeld and the notes of the violin of Christian-Pierre La Marca for a moment intimate, almost sacred. The Angevin group. The Angevin group Lo’Jo invites us to discover the symbolic places of their career in their hometown. He offers us a committed mini concert that reflects the vision of the world and society of the singer of the group, Denis Péan.
