Wheat production in Burkina: a first cooperative in Houet to organize the sector

Wheat producers in the Houet province held a constitutive general assembly for the establishment of a cooperative, this Thursday, January 11, 2024. The opening ceremony took place in the meeting room of the regional management of the agriculture of the Hauts-Bassins.

In Burkina Faso, wheat is generally imported from Ukraine and other countries. However, with the arrival of Captain Ibrahim Traoré to power, who reminded producers to produce a lot of wheat to avoid imports. This is how several people began to become interested in the sector. Thus, to better organize the sector, wheat producers from the Houet province came together to establish a cooperative. The objective is to better organize wheat producers and facilitate the sale of the product throughout the country.
According to Alphonse Sanou, a trained agronomist and wheat producer in Nasso, “there already exists an association of wheat producers, but we saw fit to also create a cooperative. To do this, we contacted producers, technicians and associations in the province working in the field with a view to setting up the office.
Souleymane Ramdé, representing the regional director of agriculture of Hauts-Bassins, supported the initiative which he finds beautiful. As a result, he says he is committed on behalf of management to supporting wheat producers.
For Dr Jacob Sanou, regional director of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of Hauts-Bassins, “This cooperative will be welcome, because it is a first in Burkina. Usually, it is the State which organizes the producers but this time, it is they who took the initiative to organize themselves into a cooperative. We have already undertaken training for producers but we will continue with processors as well as the assembly of other links in the wheat sector.
“I hope that this will happen without major difficulties and I am counting on you to ensure that the wheat sector occupies an important place in the country. I remain available to support producers,” said Jacob Sanou.
Remember that the participants in the Assembly came from several communes of Houet such as Bobo-Dioulasso, Bama, Faramana, Karangasso Sambla, Karangasso Vigué, Dandé, Padéma, Péni, Toussiana, etc.
