WhatsApp – The Commission demands accountability! – President’s ticket

Victoire ! The European alert launched in July 2021 by the European Consumers’ Organization (BEUC) and 8 of its members, including UFC-Que Choisir, to the supervisory authorities about unfair practices linked to the updating of general conditions of WhatsApp, reacted the European Commission.

The UFC-Que Choisir denounced in particular the fact that the application urged its users, under threat of no longer being able to use it, to accept new general conditions that were not transparent and understandable, in particular with regard to the sharing of the data collected.

At the end of January, the EU executive ordered WhatsApp to indicate how it ensures that consumers understand the consequences of accepting the new terms of use. The app should also detail the use of personal data, including consumers’ awareness that their data is being shared with Facebook/Meta or third-party services.

A call to order as firm as it is welcome on the need for WhatsApp, like all operators, to obtain informed consent from its users, particularly with regard to the use of the personal data collected!
