Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A number of old cellphones will no longer be able to use WhatsApp as of March 2024. One of them is a cellphone that uses Android 5 or earlier.
Gizchina notes there is no other solution for users of Android 5 or older phones. There are only two options, namely upgrading to the latest cellphone model with an operating system compatible with WhatsApp requirements or switching to another messaging application.
Meanwhile, on the Help Center page, WhatsApp explains the operating systems currently supported. In addition to Android 5 and later, there is also iOS 12 and later and KaiOS 2.5.0 and later.
This support will continue to change every year. WhatsApp said what mobile devices and software had the oldest and fewest users.
“Every year we observe which telephone devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices may also not have the latest security updates or may not have the functionality required to run WhatsApp,” WhatsApp wrote, quoted Thursday (29/2/ 2024).
The company ensures that it will continue to update the list of OS that its platform no longer supports. The latest notifications will be provided periodically on the Help Center page.
WhatsApp also provides notifications to users affected by the blocking. The number of notifications was not explained, but it only said ‘several times’ before support for the operating system used was stopped.
“Before we stop support for the operating system you are using, you will be notified on WhatsApp and reminded several times to upgrade the operating system,” said WhatsApp.
