WhatsApp ‘last seen’ status can now be hidden from certain people

By default, WhatsApp shows at the top of chats the date and time a contact was last online. Until now, users were given three options for who can see this information: nobody, everyone, or contacts. Here comes one now fourth option at: ‘My contacts except’. Users can then set exactly which people do not see their ‘last seen’ status.

The ‘last seen’ status is privacy sensitive because it indicates when someone last used the app. That’s one way to find out if someone was able to read a message, even if the person turned off read receipts in the app.

The new setting also applies to showing the profile picture, information and status. The options are available through the menu under Account > Privacy.

New functions

Earlier this week, WhatsApp introduced the ability to transfer chat history from Android to iPhone.

Last month, the chat service added some new functions including responding to messages with emojis. From now on, 512 people can also participate in WhatsApp groups and shared files can be a maximum of 2 GB.
