What you need to know about painkillers

In the case of intense pain, which prevents us from doing our daily chores, taking a sedative seems like a natural gesture. In choosing the right medicine, the severity and type of pain must be taken into account. Depending on the intensity of the pain (mild, moderate, severe), the World Health Organization recommends a certain painkiller medication. Thus, for mild pain, neopioid analgesics (paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac) are recommended, for moderate pain – weak opioid analgesics, and for severe pain, strong opioids are indicated.

Paracetamol – watch out for overdose!

Considered the best-selling painkiller in the world, paracetamol is indicated in dental neuralgia, headache, sciatica, sprains, fractures, dislocations. In adults and children over 12 years of age, the usual dose is 500 mg, which can be repeated every 6-8 hours. The dose of 1 g / dose and 4 g / 24 hours should not be exceeded. Exceeding the doses indicated on the leaflet affects the liver. In fact, the drug is not indicated for people with hepatitis, chronic alcoholism, severe liver or kidney failure. Side effects of paracetamol include coagulation disorders, dizziness and edema.

Aspirin, indicated only after the age of 12 years

Acetylsalicylic acid or aspirin acts by blocking the anti-inflammatory process, being, at the same time, analgesic and antipyretic (decreases fever). It is indicated in rheumatic, muscular, head, pharyngeal or type of pain that accompanies the flu and cold. For adults, the indicated single dose is 1 tablet (500 mg), the minimum period between 2 doses being at least 4 hours. The dose of 4 g / day of aspirin should not be exceeded. Possible reactions to this medicine include bleeding (including gastrointestinal) and hives. Children should not take aspirin, because of the possible risk of Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious disorder that causes liver and neurological damage.
