Recently, the New York authorities published a video on YouTube explaining to the population how to prepare in the event of a nuclear attack. This video happens quite curiously in the context of the war in Ukraine in which the United States is very involved.
An official public announcement
Americans and more particularly the inhabitants of New York have discovered a short video posted on the YouTube platform July 11, 2022 (see end of article). It was published by the NYC Emergency Management, otherwise known as the emergency management office from the city. It was a public announcement telling people how to prepare for a nuclear attack.
One thing is certain, the timing of the publication of the announcement is rather anxiety-provoking, even inappropriate. Recall that since February 2022, Russia has been waging a war against Ukraine, the latter receiving significant military aid from the United States. For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues the rhetoric of a possible atomic response. In this regard, it should be noted that Russia is continuing to develop hypersonic missiles such as the Avangard, which would be able to fly at a speed of Mach 27, or more than 30,000 km/h. To counter what Russia believes represents an expansion of NATO, there is also talk of equipping neighboring Belarus with nuclear missiles.
A timing assumed by the authorities
Since the release of the NYC Emergency Management video, almost 800,000 people read it. However, Eric Adams, the mayor of New York, says to take this initiative, as reported by the media NPR July 13. He believes that the probability of a nuclear attack is very low. On the other hand, he thinks that the population must all the same be prepared in case. In short, if an attack remains improbable, it is not impossible. And what about the advice given to the population? In the event of a nuclear attack, the best thing to do is to run for cover inside a building. Then it will take stay away from doors and windows which must be caulked as best as possible. It is also advisable to change clothes and to wash immediately, then to get information by the means still available.
Researchers estimated in 2020 that humanity as a whole is unprepared in the event of a nuclear attack. The premise is: the world was not ready for the recent Covid-19 pandemic and this should be the case for other types of disasters. In particular, the authors underlined the importance of prevention, limiting the proliferation of nuclear weaponsthe securing of installations or even the reduction of the risks of nuclear terrorism.
