What is the situation like at the Würzburg clinics?

Even if things look relatively better in the city and district of Würzburg than in other regions in Germany, the numbers of people who tested positive for corona are still at a high level. On Wednesday, as of 7.30 a.m., the health department reported a further 26 people who tested positive for Covid-19 compared to the previous day. According to the health department, the 7-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants as of Wednesday morning in Würzburg is 82.07. In the district it is currently 72.09. The increasing numbers of infections are also reflected in the clinics in the region.

Staff under constant stress

15 corona patients were treated in the Würzburg Mitte Clinic on Tuesday. Four of them in the 20-bed intensive care unit. “By and large, this corresponds to the workload of the last two to three weeks,” explains Daniela Kalb, press spokeswoman for the hospital. For comparison: On December 1st, 16 Covid-19 patients were reported at the Klinikum Würzburg Mitte. Two of them were in intensive care. “Four patients may not sound like much at first, but this is a very dynamic situation,” reports Kalb. The staff is under constant stress, as you always have to keep an eye on the situation on a daily basis.

In some cases, restrictions had to be made, the press spokeswoman said. Operations were selectively canceled in order to create capacity. However: “Basically, compared to other districts around Würzburg, we are still doing relatively well if you look at the RKI figures,” says Kalb. A supply can currently be guaranteed in any case. And: “We can always react at short notice if something changes in the numbers.”

The situation in Ochsenfurt has eased

“Four weeks ago there was a lot going on here,” reports Dr. Manfred Knof, chief physician of the department for anesthesia and intensive care medicine at the Mainklinik Ochsenfurt. He names the corona outbreak in the Haus Fuchsenmühle retirement home as the reason. “In the last few weeks, however, the situation has eased again. But now we are noticing that the numbers are rising again.”

There is space for a total of twelve patients in the intensive care unit of the Main Clinic. Two beds are occupied by corona patients to be ventilated. The unusual: “Both patients are younger than 60 years,” says Knof. In addition, there are another confirmed and three suspected corona cases in the care ward. “Here we are still waiting for the results of the tests.”

Even if the numbers in Germany continue to rise, Knof can reassure: “We still have everything under control.” In contrast to regions like Main-Spessart, the location in Würzburg, Ochsenfurt or Kitzingen is “in a very good condition.”

Intensive care unit at university clinic increasingly busy

Susanne Just, press spokeswoman for the Würzburg University Hospital, cannot confirm this. “The intensive care units are increasingly busy,” she explains when asked by this editorial team. But especially by patients with acute serious illnesses other than Covid. Of the 118 available intensive care beds, 90 are currently occupied. Twelve of them from corona patients. Above all, the lack of staff is a problem.

A total of 33 Covid-19 patients are currently being treated in the university clinic – in intensive care and peripheral wards. According to the clinic, there has not been a large increase in the past few weeks. “The numbers have fluctuated between 24 and 34 patients in the last two weeks,” said Just.
