At that time, director Eduards Smilģis ruled the Daile Theater. Gunārs Placēns thanks Smiļgis for hiring him and added a good dose of comedy to Smiļgis’ principles – simplicity, clarity, passion – with his work in the theater.
Mr. Placena worked in his one and most beloved theater, the Daile, for 70 years. The works of him Šveik, Sancho Panza, Dr. Watson and Adolf Alunāns will always remain in the Theater’s Golden Foundation. Placen is an excellent comedian. As he himself says in a radio interview: “There is no greater joy than hearing laughter in the corridor”. The long years on stage are not just numbers in the employment contract, the actor has also acted in the last seasons of the theater.
What is the secret of a long and hectic life? The actor himself says: “You just have to live beautifully!” His colleague Artūrs Skrastiņš says in the anniversary video on Placena: “Diabolical bohemian!”
Although Gunārs Placen is still on the list of actors employed by the theater, he admits that the main director of his life is now his wife Ruta.
Bees live on the roof of the Daile Theater. Although he hasn’t worked with bees, Gunārs Placen as an actor deserves a barrel of honey for the joy he has brought to his audience.
